Discrimination can not ties to death
Recommend these queer movies and series

In Monday's edition of the Newspaper I get criticism from "Erlend", which is patrolling commissioner in the centre of Oslo. He responds in an interview I gave to the Newspaper, where I primarily criticize prime minister Erna's comments to the situation in the united STATES after the assassination of George Floyd.

My is going on that she repeatedly used the controversial kriminalitetsstatistikk to create an understanding of discrimination from the part of the american police, without to examine the statistics or emphasize that such discrimination based on background or skin color, whatever, is unacceptable.

In the interview points out, I that we in Norway have a discussion about the so-called ethnic profiling in police work. It will say that the groups that belong to a certain ethnicity or religion, have a foreign appearance or characteristics, be subject to more frequent police checks than the rest of the population. It is this Erlend respond to, because he believes this issue is marginal and that the I brand and weakens the police's trust by producing it as a big problem.

Down on my knees, Erna! Debate

Erlend invites me to join him on patrol in the centre of Oslo. Before I go any further, I want to thank a big yes to the invitation!

I never meant to do the problem bigger than it is. But unfortunately suggests that we have of research in the field of ethnic profiling happens in Norway. It is also confirmed by the experiences of individuals. In the nordic study "We are seen as a threat" from 2018, almost all minoritetsguttene been stopped by the police, without having been explained the reason they were stopped. 30 of them were from Oslo city centre to the east and south. The reason the young people themselves give for having been stopped by the police, including clothing, appearance and religious expression.

In 2018 there came also forth on NRK that twice as many youth in vestkantbydelene Frogner and Ullern in Oslo, norway, have used marijuana than in østkantbydelene Stovner and Alna. Nevertheless, it was registered almost three times as many narkotikaforhold on young people between 10 and 17 years of politihuset in Greenland compared to Majorstua police station.

We must ask ourselves what the cause is.

Kriminalitetsstatistikk can give a distorted picture of reality, because what you find depends on where you're looking. Why should such statistics are not used by politicians to justify differential treatment, so I felt that the prime minister did when she talked about the situation in the united STATES. It is the debate I want to travel.

A hell of a negro with dialect Debate

In 2016 I took up ethnic profiling in the police force in Parliament with the then minister of justice, Anders Anundsen, after that your Organization against public discrimination were concerned that minorities experiencing extended and needless immigration and narkotikakontroller. According to the Exclamations were particularly young with dark skin color who are stopped often.

I want to take with even a perspective here: the Same justice minister from the progress party got strong criticism of the Parliament for having contributed to the massive data lengeværende asylbarn the summer and in the autumn of 2014, despite the political consensus to shield just those asylbarna.

In the consultations of Parliament's control, it was apparent that the police had given priority to bring out the families with children because this is a simple and effective way to follow up the politically determined target figure of the number uttransporter. A target figure which was increased abruptly in June 2014, with stortingsflertallets blessing, so the police got increased time pressure on them. Families with children are in fact easy to find.

The same system, that we can increasingly adopt target figures for the number of returns of immigrants the Uk should do every year, with or without coercion, also contribute to the pressure on the police to find immigrants without residence permit in the cityscape. This has the Antiracist Centre warned. In their supplement to the official Norwegian report to the Un convention on the elimination in 2018, they write: "Individuals who experience to be controlled on the basis of appearance, are often young people, and particularly young men, with a background from Afghanistan, the middle East, North and East Africa, which is suspected to be undocumented, asylum seekers with rejected or criminals, as well as the women with West african background, who are suspected to be prostitutes."

My confidence in the police in Norway is great, and I have the impression that the police in general are aware that ethnic profiling is not going to happen. It is a good thing. But this is also a political debate, where the parties probably disagree about how dangerous it is to contribute to the discrimination from public officials and the stigmatiseringen this means.

Norway is to be a fair society, where police have wide confidence. When must all be able to use public accommodations equally, without being subjected to discrimination. As long as ethnic profiling in police work actually happens, it is incredibly important that we politicians are clear that it is unacceptable, regardless of whether the intention is good.

One does not create trust on the tie, but by having an open and sober debate about the challenges and dilemmas, where also the police themselves can participate and contribute to the understanding of the work on the ground.
