US authorities identify Texas shooter as suspected neo-Nazi sympathizer

Kamala Harris reiterates that "all Americans deserve to be safe from gun violence"

MADRID, 8 May. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The US authorities have identified the attacker of the shooting at a shopping center that left about a dozen dead in Dallas as Mauricio García, 33, and have indicated that he was an alleged neo-Nazi sympathizer.

The attacker had multiple social media accounts and appeared to be drawn to neo-Nazi and white supremacist content, while wearing a chest patch with the initials of an alleged Nazi group, but officials have stressed that it is too early to conclude that this is the cause of the attack.

Investigators are also studying possible relationships he may have with gangs of prisoners and cartel members, according to the CBS television network.

Garcia opened fire this Saturday at several people in a shopping center in the small suburb of Allen, before being shot dead by a police officer. In the attack he killed eight people and injured another seven, including minors.

The Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, who has conveyed her condolences to the families of the victims, has remarked that the Biden administration "will continue to support federal, state, and local law enforcement in their investigations."

"Yesterday, Allen, Texas was rocked by a senseless mass shooting at a shopping center, one of too many communities affected by gun violence," Harris said, according to a White House statement.

Harris has lamented that practical steps are not being taken, despite the fact that the solutions are known and the American people would support them without division, as he has stated.

"While much we still don't know about this attack, here's what we do know: All Americans deserve to be safe from gun violence. But they're not," he added.

Hours earlier, US President Joe Biden ordered the flags of the entire country to fly at half mast on May 11 in tribute to those killed in the shooting.

Biden recalled that the attacker, dressed in tactical clothing and armed with an AR-15 type rifle, fired at "innocent people" in a shopping center. "This attack is too shocking to be so familiar, and yet American communities have already suffered some 200 shootings so far this year," the president said.
