The US sends the first ship with equipment to build a temporary port to provide humanitarian aid in Gaza

MADRID, 10 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced this Sunday the departure of a first ship with the necessary equipment for the construction of a temporary port to manage the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, as promised by the US president. , Joe Biden, this week.

"On March 9, the US Army ship 'General Frank S. Besson' (...) departed Joint Base Langley-Eustis en route to the eastern Mediterranean less than 36 hours after President Biden announced that The US would provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza by sea," CENTCOM explained in a post on the social network X, formerly Twitter.

The Command has described 'Bensson' as "a logistical support ship" and has highlighted that "it carries the first equipment to establish a temporary dock to deliver vital humanitarian supplies."

The announcement by the US Army comes after Joe Biden said this Thursday in his State of the Union address that he had ordered the country's Armed Forces to establish a temporary port in Gaza to receive and manage the shipment of humanitarian aid to the region.

During his speech, the president announced that the port in question will allow a "massive increase" in the amount of humanitarian aid that arrives daily to the enclave, although he clarified that there will be no US military on the ground.

Israel's severe restrictions on the delivery of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip are leaving a Palestinian population without reserves, which in addition to dying under bombs is already beginning to die from starvation and disease.

Palestinian doctors confirmed this Saturday the death of two more people from starvation and dehydration in the Gaza Strip, bringing to 25 the total number of deaths due to lack of food or water since the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas.
