The stock of merchandise in commerce rises 7.9% in the third quarter

The level of merchandise inventories in the commerce sector registered a year-on-year increase of 7.9% in the third quarter of the year, a rate 4.3 points lower than that of the previous quarter and the least pronounced since the first quarter of 2022, according to the current survey on stocks and stocks (ECSE) published this Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the rebound in the third quarter, the stock of merchandise in commerce has accumulated nine quarters of positive interannual rates, the highest in this period being that of the fourth quarter of 2022 (19.8%).

The greatest increase in stock in the third quarter was experienced by the sale and repair of motor vehicles, with a year-on-year increase of 33.2%, followed by retail trade (3.9%) and wholesale trade (3.7%). .

The INE also provides information on how the level of stocks evolved in trade in each of the months of the third quarter (July, August and September) in interannual rates.

In July 2023, the sector's merchandise stock rose 10.1% compared to the same month in 2022, while in August it rose 8% year-on-year and in September, 5.8%, its lowest year-on-year increase since January 2022.

All sectors presented year-on-year increases in the months corresponding to the third quarter, with the sales and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles being the most pronounced, exceeding 31% in all months of the quarter.

For its part, the most moderate year-on-year increase in merchandise stock in July occurred in retail trade (5.3%), while in August and September the smallest advances corresponded to wholesale trade (3.6% and 1.2 %, respectively).
