The PSOE wants to recover the Ministry of Equality in the distribution of portfolios with Sumar

MADRID, 3 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The PSOE intends to recover the Ministry of Equality and return this portfolio to the socialist wing of the Government, according to sources from the PSOE leadership. In the last legislature, Igualdad was left in the hands of the minority partner, Unidas Podemos, led by Irene Montero, and has generated internal tensions in the coalition.

At this moment, according to what they indicate, the negotiations between PSOE and Sumar are focused on programmatic agreements and the distribution of ministries is not yet being discussed, although the socialists' intention is to once again control a portfolio that they consider to be of great importance.

Furthermore, regarding the statements of the second vice president and leader of Sumar, Yolanda Díaz, who this Monday told the King that her party is still "very far" from reaching an agreement with the PSOE to form a new coalition government, socialist sources They consider that it says one thing inside and another outside.

Therefore, in the ranks of the PSOE there is no concern about a possible breakup of Díaz, they point out that they see the glass "half full" and they even ironically point out that it is a behavior, saying one thing inside the meeting and the opposite outside, that they remembers former vice president Pablo Iglesias.

In this case, the negotiation will be between the acting president of the Government and leader of the PSOE, Pedro Sánchez y Díaz. Both parties will form a new coalition government if Sánchez is appointed by the King and obtains the majority to become president again.

In the last legislature, Unidas Podemos obtained the second vice presidency of the Government, first in the hands of Iglesias and then Díaz, as well as the portfolio of Equality, Social Rights and Agenda 2030 with Ione Belarra at the helm; Consumption, Alberto Garzón and Universities, first with Manuel Castells and later with Joan Subirats.

Throughout the legislature, the Ministry of Equality has generated various controversies and internal noise that have been recognized by both sides of the coalition. The most significant was the application of the 'yes means yes' law, the star rule of the department of Montero, which led to the reduction of the sentences of more than a thousand sexual offenders and the release of more than a hundred.

This ministry was created for the first time by the socialist Government of José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2008 and the first holder was Bibiana Aído, who spent two years in office. More than a decade later, in 2020, Sánchez recovered the portfolio and put Montero in charge.
