The head of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea reappears in a meeting after Ukraine left him for dead

MADRID, 26 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The commander of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea, Viktor Sokolov, reappeared this Tuesday at a meeting of the Ministry of Defense, a day after the Ukrainian Armed Forces declared him dead as a result of an attack carried out last Friday on a Sevastopol military barracks, Crimea.

Sokolov is among those attending a meeting led by the minister, Sergei Shoigu, via videoconference, according to images released by the department itself. The Ministry has not reported in its note the presence of the fleet commander, which official agencies do report.

Shortly before the meeting, Kremlin spokesman Dimitri Peskov had avoided evaluating the speculation surrounding Sokolov's situation, delegating any explanation about the case to the Ministry of Defense.

During the meeting, Shoigu updated some data related to the conflict in Ukraine, to ensure that Russian forces have killed more than 17,000 Ukrainian soldiers this month and destroyed 2,700 weapons and military equipment, including several supposedly provided by Kiev's international allies.

Likewise, the minister has stressed that the counteroffensive launched by Ukrainian forces at the beginning of June continues without achieving "significant results" and has accused the "cynicism" of the West of pushing Ukraine towards "self-destruction", launching troops into attacks "without sense".
