The Government hopes to clean up the accounts on the roads without having to introduce tolls

MADRID, 18 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Government has affirmed that it is discussing with the European Commission its commitment to reduce the investment deficit in Spanish roads without having to introduce tolls on the highways from next year.

This was stated by the Minister for Territorial Policy and Government spokesperson, Isabel Rodríguez, during the press conference after the Council of Ministers, on the commitment assumed by Spain to address a payment for use on the highways in the framework of the receipt of European funds.

"The minister in charge of the branch has already shown itself emphatically," said Rodríguez, referring to several interventions by the Minister of Transport, Raquel Sánchez, who has "absolutely" denied that in 2024 tolls will be imposed on the highways.

In this way, Rodríguez has explained that what the Government is doing with the European Commission, within the framework of the development of the recovery plan, is precisely to see how the maintenance of the road network is addressed without addressing it through payment by use.

"We are working on a global plan that also involves more sustainable mobility, which is what the Government has worked on, promoting public transport and making it free", the minister spokesperson concluded.
