The European Parliament asks Congress for information on the "scope" of the Amnesty Law

STRASBOURG (FRANCE), 22 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (LIBE) has sent a request to the Congress of Deputies and the Ministry of Justice to be sent a copy of the proposed amnesty law and information on its "scope" .

This is stated in a letter signed by the president of the European parliamentary commission, MEP Juan Fernando López Aguilar, dated November 17 and in which the former socialist Minister of Justice explains that he is thus giving effect to a decision adopted by the Coordinators of the political groups in this commission.

As parliamentary sources have explained to Europa Press, the idea of contacting the Spanish authorities to request more information arose at the initiative of the European People's Party and went ahead with the support of a majority of groups, including Liberals (RE) and European Conservatives and Reformists ( ECR).

The text signed by López Aguilar is addressed to the president of the Congress of Deputies, Francina Armengol, and was also sent to the then Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, who since Tuesday has been replaced by Félix Bolaños.

In it, the MEP clarifies that the LIBE commission is aware that the Commissioner for Justice, Dider Reynders, has already requested this information from the Spanish Government and that Bolaños responded by pointing out that the law must still go through parliamentary processing in the Congress of the Deputies and showing their willingness to meet as soon as possible to offer the necessary details to the Community Executive.

In this context, the coordinators of the European parliamentary commission want to request "some clarifications" about the "scope" of the amnesty, "which will cover more than ten years and will benefit a significant number of people involved in the Catalan independence movement."

Therefore, concludes the text seen by Europa Press, the coordinators would like to receive a copy of the bill.
