The creation of companies in February marks a record since 2008, with 10,960 companies, after rising 7.9%

The number of new commercial companies increased by 7.9% in February compared to the same month of the previous year, reaching a total of 10,960 companies, its highest figure in this month since 2008, according to data released this Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

With the rebound in February, business creation has seen two consecutive months of year-on-year increases after the 13.1% growth recorded in January, the month in which the highest number of new companies was also achieved since 2008.

For the constitution of the 10,960 companies created in February, more than 527.9 million euros were subscribed, which represents 53.1% more than in the same month of 2023, while the average capital subscribed, which stood at 48,172 euros , advanced 41.9%.

For its part, the dissolution of companies decreased by 5.9% year-on-year in the second month of the year, with 2,545 companies disappearing. In this way, every day of the month of February, 88 companies closed.

Of the 2,545 companies that were dissolved in February, 84.9% did so voluntarily, 7% due to a merger with other companies and the remaining 8.1% for other reasons.

18.4% of the commercial companies that were created in February were dedicated to commerce and 17.1% to real estate, financial and insurance activities. Regarding the companies dissolved by main economic activity, 19.7% belonged to commerce and 18.5% to construction.

For its part, the number of commercial companies that increased capital increased by 3.9% in February in an interannual rate, up to 3,004 companies. The capital subscribed in these increases exceeded 2,991 million euros, 33.8% higher than that of February 2023, while the average capital was 995,861 euros, 28.7% more.

ASTURIAS AND THE BASQUE COUNTRY LEAD THE INCREASES IN BUSINESS CREATION

The communities that created the greatest number of companies in February were Madrid (2,720 companies), Catalonia (2,032) and Andalusia, where 1,616 companies were created.

The regions that formed the fewest companies in the second month of the year were La Rioja (40), Cantabria (68) and Navarra (82).

According to Statistics, a total of eleven communities created more companies last February than in the same month of 2023, five presented year-on-year decreases and one, Cantabria, registered no variation.

The greatest increases in the creation of companies were carried out by Asturias (22%), the Basque Country (20.4%), Aragon (16.6%) and the Valencian Community (15.3%), while the most moderate advances were made in Galicia (2.1%) and the Balearic Islands (3.4%).

At the other extreme, with the greatest year-on-year declines in business creation, were Navarra (-29.3%), La Rioja (-21.5%) and Murcia (-15%).
