STATEMENT: The College of Geologists proposes 23 measures for sustainable development in Galicia

Madrid, January 30, 2024 - The delegation of the Illustrious Official College of Geologists (ICOG) in Galicia has presented a compendium of 23 measures aimed at the political parties of Galicia, underlining the importance and value of the geological profession in the advanced society and economy of our time.

The objective is to make the most of available geological knowledge for economic, social and environmental progress. Through this knowledge, it is possible to "prevent disasters, take advantage of resources and not wrongly blame nature for adverse events, when it is possible to anticipate and mitigate them," indicates the ICOG.

The document aims for Galicia to develop its own geological policy, inviting political parties to incorporate these proposals in their electoral programs with a view to a more prosperous and sustainable future.

Despite its "growing recognition" in Spain, especially for its "significant contributions in geotechnics for construction and environmental protection, the profession of geologist is still not equal to the relevance it has in other countries in the more developed environment," he adds. .

Energy potential, research and geological studies

In this sense, the ICOG proposes a more active participation of geologists in the private sector, as well as the creation of a Geological Service that operates with high management capacity over natural resources and urban planning.

"We emphasize the critical importance of detailed geological and geotechnical studies, which could mitigate significant cost overruns in state infrastructure, thus promoting greater efficiency in the cost/benefit relationship for Public Administrations," says the College.

ICOG's commitment is aligned with the international fight against climate change and the transition towards clean energies, highlighting Galicia's potential in the geological panorama for the use of geothermal, renewable and critical mineral energy resources, as well as in adaptation to the new European legislation on mining.

Furthermore, the institution draws attention to the importance of geology in fundamental, but often invisible, aspects, such as the characterization of seabeds and territorial planning, as well as in the evaluation of coastal and maritime risks, including those associated with the sea ​​level rise and possible tsunamis.

Research in the field of radon, particularly in the granitic areas of Galicia, is mentioned as crucial to prevent possible negative impacts on public health.

In tourism, the ICOG highlights the declaration of Geoparks by UNESCO in Galicia, which have become benchmarks for nature tourism, proposing the creation of a network for the protection of Geological Heritage, Geonatura.
