Sánchez faces the meeting with Meloni without the intention of confronting models or highlighting ideological differences

The President of the Government has just landed in Rome to hold his first meeting with the Italian leader

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, faces the meeting this Wednesday with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, without the intention of confronting models or underlining the ideological differences between governments, according to sources from Moncloa have indicated to Europa Press.

On the contrary, they hope to highlight the points in common as Mediterranean countries with the aim of advancing on various points -especially in migration- during the Spanish Presidency of the European Union

Sánchez has just landed in the Italian capital and will be received by Meloni at the Chigi Palace. They will then hold a face-to-face meeting and a working lunch and finally offer an institutional statement without questions.

Despite the ideological distance that separates the socialist government of Sánchez and that of Meloni, from the extreme right, the sources consulted emphasize that the objective of the meeting is not to point out these differences but to emphasize the points in common.

They thus recall that the visit is intended as preparation for the EU Presidency that Spain assumes in the second half of this year. Sánchez wants to know Meloni's point of view on the Migration and Asylum Pact that has been discussed for years within the EU with the aim of reaching an agreement during Sánchez's term.

Regarding the fact that the Meloni government is of the extreme right and also maintains closeness and ties with Vox, in Moncloa they indicate that they know the starting positions, but they emphasize that it is a meeting in the capacity of heads of government and not of leaders of parties.

In this regard, it should be remembered that Meloni, months before being elected Prime Minister, participated in the Andalusian election campaign in June 2022. In a rally in Marbella together with the party leader Santiago Abascal and the then candidate to preside over the Junta de Andalusia, Macarena Olona, ​​made a fiery defense of the "natural" family and the Catholic religion and against abortion, Islamist violence and the LGTBI lobby

This speech took place in June and Meloni won the election in October. Since then, they point out from Moncloa, the Italian prime minister has moderated her speech. They also think that Italy has acted responsibly within the framework of Med 9 and Med 5, forums in which it shares membership with Spain.

Also regarding the conflict in Ukraine, where Italy has supported the aid sent to kyiv despite the great dependence of the Italian economy on Moscow at the start of the war.
