Scholz guarantees Sánchez Germany's support for Nadia Calviño to preside over the EIB

MADRID, 11 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has guaranteed the Secretary General of the PSOE and Acting President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, Germany's support for the Acting First Vice President, Nadia Calviño, to preside over the European Investment Bank (EIB), according to Moncloa sources have confirmed.

This was communicated by the German president to Sánchez during the Congress that the European Socialist Party (PES) is holding this Saturday in Malaga. Germany's support is very important because the vote is weighted according to what the States contribute to the EIB and to preside over the bank the support of 68% of the capital and at least 18 member States is needed.

Germany contributes around 19%, the same as France or Italy, while Spain contributes almost 10% to the EIB. The race to preside over the organization makes the support of the main economic powers of the EU essential.

Calviño has already said on several occasions that his candidacy to preside over the EIB has "strong support", although he has not revealed what they are. His motivation for leading the bank is to "further strengthen" the European Union "at a" complex "time, which is why he considers presiding over the bank an "inspiring task."

However, the acting Minister of Economic Affairs is also fighting to be the successor of Werner Hoyer at the head of the EIB with the until now executive vice president of the European Commission responsible for Competition, the Danish liberal Margrethe Vestager. Together with them, the Polish Teresa Czerwinska, the Italian Daniele Franco and the Swede Thomas Östro remain in the race.
