WASHINGTON, May 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Lupus Federation (WLF) established World Lupus Day on May 10 to unite lupus groups around the world during Lupus Awareness Month and draw attention to the impact the disease has on the more than 5 million people affected by lupus worldwide. This year, on May 10, on the occasion of World Lupus Day, the World Lupus Federation urges the general public, including people living with lupus, their friends and family, to raise awareness and share information about the disease in social media and in their communities.

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause inflammation and pain anywhere in the body, including the heart, kidneys, lungs, blood, joints, and skin. In lupus, the immune system, which normally fights infection, attacks healthy tissue. Although anyone can develop lupus, 90% of people with the disease are women. It has no known causes or cure, and can be disabling and life-threatening.

Access to care and medication remains a major challenge for lupus patients around the world. A recent WLF global survey revealed that 1 in 4 respondents delayed or did not receive medical care when needed in the last 12 months, the main reasons being waiting time (44%), fatigue (22%) and cost (22%). Those who delayed or did not receive medical care were also twice as likely to experience multiple flares, a time when lupus symptoms such as pain and inflammation worsen.

"World Lupus Day is an incredibly important opportunity to raise awareness about the physical, emotional and economic impact that lupus can have," said Professor Syed Atiqul Haq, President of the Bangladesh Lupus Foundation and member of the Board of Directors of the Lupus Foundation. WLF, made up of eight countries. "For many in Bangladesh and around the world, lupus is not understood, which can delay diagnosis and leave those living with the disease feeling misunderstood and unable to receive the care they need for this debilitating disease. Every voice that sharing facts on World Lupus Day can have an incredible impact and bring more attention and resources to efforts to end lupus."

The World Lupus Federation encourages people around the world to share facts about lupus and raise awareness on World Lupus Day, May 10, using the official toolkit, either by contacting the media locals and policy makers or through one person's social media channels. The toolkit offers various awareness-raising resources and tools, including shareable materials on social media in English and Spanish. People around the world are also encouraged to wear purple and light buildings purple to shed light on the fight to end lupus.
