On the eve of the UN review, the United Arab Emirates has much to be proud of in terms of an increasingly impressive portfolio of human rights achievements that set the tone at a high level in a tough neighborhood.

The United Arab Emirates will present its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) to the United Nations on May 8, 2023, detailing the progress it has made to improve human rights and meet international obligations. The International Movement for Peace and Coexistence (IMPAC) is pleased to report that according to a report by a coalition of 53 NGOs dedicated to monitoring human rights conditions, the UAE has made significant progress in promoting and protecting of human rights in recent years, and that these developments have significant implications for the wider Middle East region.

The coalition presented its report during an international event attended by experts, researchers and academics, which reviewed the efforts and achievements of the UAE over the past fifty years. The coalition also organized an international symposium in Geneva, parallel to the 52nd session of the Human Rights Council, where current and future human rights challenges in the UAE were discussed. Recent progress on human rights in the UAE was discussed at a symposium organized by a coalition of human rights organizations. The symposium was attended by human rights experts and representatives from various countries.

Eight international experts in the field of human rights spoke at the symposium, considering many aspects of the leadership achieved by the UAE, especially in the fields of civil, political and economic rights, climate protection, the pursuit of peace, the promotion of tolerance and human coexistence, education and training, and the challenges faced by the UAE to improve its position as a world leader in promoting a more just and equitable society.

The coalition also participated in the 52nd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council by submitting a series of written statements to the Human Rights Council, including an account of the UAE's impressive achievements in achieving the climate justice and its central role in hosting the COP28 Climate Change conference to be held in November/December 2023. Other statements praised the UAE's progress in strengthening national human rights strategies and dissemination policies. tolerance and fight against discrimination and racism.

Coalition members also made seven oral statements during the general debate, highlighting and endorsing the UAE's successful efforts in countering extremism and global terrorism. The UAE's significant efforts and leadership in promoting women's rights and global leadership were also lauded, especially the work of Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, President of the Supreme Council of Women, who has pioneered women's empowerment of women in the country.

The final declaration paid tribute to the global impact of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in fostering peace, promoting tolerance and human coexistence, developing a greater capacity for human brotherhood.
