Only 50% of European citizens say they are satisfied with their physical fitness; 91% of respondents want to improve at least one aspect of their health-related lifestyle

Madrid, December 1, 2023.- The HUAWEI European Health Survey 2023, published today, offers a valuable insight into the attitudes and behaviors of European citizens in relation to personal health. The survey, which explores health awareness, attitudes and behaviors, reveals, among other things, consumers' limited knowledge of what truly constitutes good health.

The research, conducted by Ipsos1, reveals the potential benefits of smartwatches at a time when preventive care and the democratization of health information are more critical than ever.

Below is a summary of some of the main conclusions of the report:

The great challenge of the population: General satisfaction

European interest in personal health is high, with equal attention to psychological well-being and physical health among respondents (>83% vs. >82%). However, overall health satisfaction remains moderate: only half of survey participants reported being satisfied with their overall health. Concerns regarding fitness (24%), mobility (26%), reduced energy levels (29%) and a significant proportion being medically overweight or obese (46%) were highlighted. In conclusion, the need for significant health improvement is evident.

Transforming daily life towards a healthy future: From desire to action

91% of people surveyed expressed their desire to improve at least one aspect of their health-related lifestyle, with the goal of improving an average of almost four (3.9) healthy habits. Reducing stress was the top priority for many (43% of respondents), followed by maintaining a healthy weight (40%), eating healthy (35%), ensuring adequate sleep (35%) and getting daily exercise (34%). %). Despite these aspirations, 72% of European citizens acknowledged needing additional motivation to follow healthy lifestyle habits.

Limitations in knowledge of Health Indicators

Reported knowledge of important health indicators is very limited (most indicators cited by respondents are not actual health measures, but rather activities such as "drinking more water"). Knowledge of what the correct “scores” should be for certain vital health metrics for each individual was also very low. This highlights a knowledge gap when it comes to metrics that significantly influence health. However, regular access to personalized health indicators directly influences a deeper understanding of advanced health: smartwatch users in Europe are on average 51% more likely to know the target measurements for all key health metrics than non-users.

Transformation through Technology: The positive impact of smartwatches on well-being

Constantly tracking multiple health metrics helps develop small habits and behavioral changes. Research data shows the impact smartwatches can have here:

o On average, smartwatch users in Europe are 51% more likely to know the correct measurements for all essential health metrics compared to non-users. Additionally, they are 75% more likely to know their body fat goal and 71% more likely to know their daily calorie goal.

o Smartwatch users check their main health parameters twice as often as non-users. Specifically, they monitor their heart rate, blood oxygen saturation and calories burned almost three times more than people who do not wear a device.

o Smartwatch users take health notifications seriously, with more than 74% seeking advice when their device alerts them of abnormal health indicators, leading 63% to visit their doctor for a detailed analysis.

o Additionally, 87% of smart watch users adopted new healthy behaviors based on information from their device, with an average of two changes per user. These changes include increased frequency of exercise (47%), longer duration of exercise (41%), better sleep habits (39%), and dietary adjustments (28%).

o 88% of users agree that their device can help improve their physical health, 86% their general quality of life and 76% their mental health.

HUAWEI leads research in health monitoring thanks to investment in three laboratories

Recognizing the growing need in the health and fitness market, HUAWEI has committed to further research into health monitoring algorithms through its wearable technologies. This led to the creation of three HUAWEI Health Labs around the world since 2016 in Xi'an and Songshan Lakes in China, and this year in Helsinki, Finland. The Finnish Health Laboratory has a multidisciplinary scientific research team consisting of 6 PhDs and 20 experts from 5 main fields (physiology, AI, machine learning, software testing and software engineering) from 7 EU countries. This ensures that all areas of sports and health research reach the most advanced standards in the world.
