- FirstElement Fuel partners with Hyundai Motor to refuel hydrogen into Class 8 fuel cell electric trucks, driving over 25,000 miles with zero emissions

Refuellings were carried out at FirstElement Fuel's first high-capacity mobile refueling station and at existing retail infrastructure to support Hyundai Motor's pilot program

NEWPORT BEACH, California, March 14, 2023/PRNewswire/ -- FirstElement Fuel, the world's leading provider of hydrogen refueling solutions, and Hyundai Motor Company, a leader in the development of Class 8 fuel cell electric trucks, join have partnered to refuel and test Hyundai Motor's XCIENT Fuel Cell heavy-duty trucks in California. Through this partnership, FirstElement Fuel is leveraging its True Zero network of hydrogen refueling stations to refuel three XCIENT Fuel Cell prototypes at 700 bar pressure. Additionally, FirstElement Fuel is deploying its first high-capacity mobile refueler, developed in collaboration between FirstElement Fuel, Taylor-Wharton and Nikkiso. The mobile refueler, which is capable of refueling a high capacity of 125 kilograms per hour, is being used to support the pilot programs of other FCEV manufacturers of heavy vehicles.

"This program has helped FirstElement understand what we need to do to deliver high-volume hydrogen refueling infrastructure for fuel cell heavy-duty trucks, and now we are ready," said Joel Ewanick, President and CEO of FirstElement Fuel. . "Our partnership with Hyundai has also given us complete confidence that fuel cell technology will ultimately meet all the needs of the zero-emissions transportation and logistics industry."

FirstElement Fuel's Class A licensed drivers are piloting three Hyundai Motor XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks on routes across California, covering more than 25,000 miles with zero emissions. FirstElement has carried out more than 120 hydrogen refills for XCIENT Fuel Cell trucks as part of this program. FirstElement is unique in offering the largest network of hydrogen stations in the world that are fueled by Liquid Hydrogen instead of Gaseous. Liquid hydrogen storage and distribution is much more efficient, enabling the large amounts of hydrogen needed to efficiently power Class 8 fuel cell electric trucks to be supplied.

Later this year, FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor will launch the world's largest commercial deployment of Class 8 trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells in Oakland, California. The project, called NorCAL ZERO, has been jointly funded by the California Energy Commission (CEC) and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and is being managed by the Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE). The hydrogen refueling partnership between FirstElement Fuel and Hyundai Motor is providing valuable data and insights that are helping to inform design considerations for the NorCal ZERO project. FirstElement Fuel sees the partnership with Hyundai Motor for hydrogen refueling as a very successful step towards the overall goal of promoting hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuels.
