Podemos is left with a single counselor in all of Spain after the departure of the Government and the 'debacle' of the regional elections

MADRID, 26 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The departure of Podemos from the coalition government between PSOE and Sumar leaves its party coordinator in Navarra, Begoña Alfaro, as its main institutional representative on the territorial map, as third vice president and Housing Minister of the regional community.

In this case, furthermore, it is a position of the party that does not maintain confrontation with Sumar in the face of the clash at the state level, participated with a broad candidacy of leftist formations (Contigo Navarra) and even attended the official launch of Yolanda's candidacy Díaz in April, from which the Podemos leadership was absent.

The loss of the ministerial portfolios, together with the setback in the last regional elections, has caused the purples to become an especially parliamentary force after their terrible result in the last regional and municipal elections of 28M. Thus, Navarra is the exception in a general trend that has led it to lose its presence in regional Executives.

For its part and within the spectrum of the left outside the PSOE, IU retains its role in the Council of Ministers like the 'commons', with respective portfolios, and enters on this occasion More Madrid enters the Executive also represented by its leader, Mónica García, at the head of Health.

Currently, Podemos has five seats in Congress and during these days it has harshly criticized PSOE and Sumar for excluding them from the Executive, highlighting that Sumar's proposal regarding its quota being the former purple leader Nacho Álvarez was a "trick", given that his bet was Irene Montero. "It is Podemos who elects Podemos ministers," they emphasized.

In this way, the purples have warned the PSOE that from now on they will act with full autonomy in Congress within the Sumar parliamentary group and that, for example with regard to the budgets, their votes will have to be negotiated.

There is also the question about the role of the purples in the face of the European elections, about whether they will finally compete alone in the midst of a disagreement with Sumar. The leader of the party, Ione Belarra, has explained that a decision has not yet been made and that they are now in a process for the transformative left to strengthen itself again.

In the last regional elections the party once again showed one of its main problems, its territorial weakness, and this caused the end of its presence in regional executives such as the Balearic Islands, Aragon, the Valencian Community and the Canary Islands.

Regarding the last two, it also became an extra-parliamentary force, as also happened in Madrid, while in the first two it experienced a sharp drop in its representation, as in the case of Asturias.

And in the Asturian case, its only parliamentarian, Covadonga Tomé, is critical of the Podemos leadership and is suspended from membership after the opening of a disciplinary file.

Thus, Podemos participated in the majority of coalitions with IU at 28M (they were only separated in Asturias and Aragón) and went from 47 regional deputies in 2019 to 15 parliamentarians this spring.

On the other hand, in the last Andalusian elections they went together with IU, Más País and other progressive formations under the brand 'Por Andalucía', without leading the candidacy in this case, and the coalition also achieved poor results with five seats, of which which two correspond to the purple ones.

In Castilla y León they have the seat of their co-spokesperson Pablo Fernández, the 'commons' maintained the type with eight deputies in the last Catalan elections and in Euskadi the former space of Unidas Podemos has six deputies.

And although in 2015 it was not part of the regional executives, at the height of its emergence due to its emergence on the political scene, it entered the regional parliaments with force, reaching up to 177 deputies.

But his greatest share of power was achieved at the municipal level, promoting candidacies for popular unity with other social formations and platforms that led him to obtain the so-called 'city councils of change' in Madrid (Manuela Carmena), Barcelona (Ada Colau), Zaragoza, La Coruña, Ferrol, Santiago or Cádiz, among others.

In these elections, the commons already lost the Consistory of the city of Barcelona and the left could not retain the baton of command in Cádiz after the departure of the institutional policy of José María González 'Kichi'.

Currently, its councilors are assigned to opposition functions with some exceptions such as Alcorcón, where the leader of Podemos in the Community of Madrid, Jesús Santos, remains in the Government team. This is also another profile that maintains a good relationship with Sumar and Díaz, who even campaigned for him in the last 28M elections.

It is also part of the Madrid town of Getafe with the councilor Alba Leo, very close to the state leadership, directs the area of Health, Consumption and Agenda 2030

At the local level, IU is stronger with 1,700 councilors and nearly 200 municipal governments, among which the mayors of Zamora and Rivas, its main municipal stronghold, stand out.
