The PP and Vox in Elche (Alicante) have signed a government agreement for the Elche City Council on Tuesday, by which the ‘popular’ Pablo Ruz will be the new mayor of the city. For its part, Vox will assume three departments — that of Family and the Elderly; that of Economic Promotion and Training; and that of Pedanías, Camp d’Elx and Territorial Vertebración.

The PSPV was the party with the most votes in the elections on May 28, but the 12 councilors achieved do not allow it to continue at the head of the consistory of the third most populous city in the Valencian Community.

The president of the PP of Elche, Pablo Ruz, and the ‘number 1’ of Vox to the consistory, Aurora Rodín, have signed the ‘Agreement for Elche’ this Tuesday in the district of Valverde, to “show the importance that the districts” in the mandate, as reported by the ‘popular’ in a statement.

The agreement establishes the six strategic lines that will mark the government action of PP and Vox. Among them are social policies; boosting economic growth and employment; the tourist projection of Elche; the improvement of infrastructures and mobility; attention to neighborhoods and districts and the promotion of sports and sporting events.

The government pact also includes that the Vox councilors will assume three council positions. Specifically, it is Family and Elderly, which “will include powers related to childhood and birth promotion, and policies in favor of life”; that of Economic Promotion and Training; and that of Pedanías, Camp d’Elx and Territorial Vertebración.

Likewise, the mayor of Vox to the consistory, Aurora Rodil, will assume the third tenure of Mayor. In addition to Rodil, on the part of Vox they have obtained the act of councilor Samuel Ruiz and Raúl Sempere. The remaining areas and responsibilities will correspond to the councilors of the PP.

Pablo Ruz has emphasized that it is a “historic day”. “We agree on lines of action and concrete measures that can transform our municipality and put Elche in a vanguard position”, he stated.

Likewise, he has specified that, in terms of strategic lines, social policies will be marked by the “conviction that the person is the center of all action” and has highlighted the “commitment to culture and enhancement of heritage” to the tourist projection of Elche.

In relation to the attention to the neighborhoods and districts, he explained that the districts will be implemented as the main instrument and, when it comes to the promotion of sports and sporting events, the creation of the Municipal Sports Board has advanced.

For his part, Rodil pointed out that the agreement was based on “two important premises”. “One is the respect we have for each other and also a sense of politics as a public service. With a single goal, to work for the people of Elche,” he highlighted.

In addition, he has opted for “listening to the districts” and considers that the project of the districts “will work so that there is more citizen participation, real democracy and the requests of the districts are heard.” “There is a lot to do, we are facing many years of little to do and much to talk about. From day one, we are going to get to work so that everything we have promised in the campaign becomes a reality,” said the representative of Vox.

After the signing of this legislature pact between PP and Vox, on Saturday June 17 the ‘popular’ Pablo Ruz will be elected mayor with the votes of both formations. In the municipal elections of May 28, the PP received 37.35% of the support, which gives it 11 councilors, which added to the three from Vox reach an absolute majority, located at 14.

For its part, the PSPV-PSOE – the party that held the Mayor’s Office and governed alongside Compromís – was the party with the most votes, with 38.66 percent of the votes and 12 councilors. However, the Socialists were two short of an absolute majority, which they could not reach with the mayor obtained by Compromís.

This Monday, the general secretary of Vox, Ignacio Garriga, called on the PP to seal agreements in the 135 municipalities in which their votes are necessary to avoid left-wing governments and put the case of the Elche City Council as an agreement, for which encouraged to follow the same path in other locations.
