North Korea launches two ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan

The North Korean authorities launched two ballistic missiles this Wednesday into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea, when the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, is in Russia to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff has indicated that it has detected the launches at 11:43 and 11:53 a.m. (local time), without giving more details about it, although they point out that it is an apparent demonstration of force by Pyongyang in the face of the encounter with Putin, reports the Yonhap news agency.

"While we strengthen our monitoring and surveillance against additional launches, our Army maintains a full readiness posture in close cooperation with the United States," the Army said in a statement collected by the aforementioned agency.

For his part, the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has ordered "to dedicate maximum effort" to the collection and analysis of information, guarantee the safety of aircraft and vessels and take "all possible precautionary measures, including preparation for contingencies".

The last time Pyongyang launched a ballistic missile was on August 30, due to joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea in the vicinity of the Korean Peninsula.

Afterwards, North Korea assured that the cruise missile battery was a maneuver to simulate "a tactical nuclear attack", to "warn enemies of the real danger of a nuclear war."

Pyongyang regularly accuses Washington and Seoul of preparing an attack with their military exercises - something both countries deny - and, despite UN resolutions, North Korea has again tested multiple missiles this year.
