Lula da Silva assures that Putin will not be arrested if he attends next year's G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro

MADRID, 10 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated this Saturday in an interview with the Indian media 'First Post' that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, would not be arrested if he attended the G20 summit next year. which will take place in Rio de Janeiro.

Lula has assured that Putin will be invited to the 2024 leaders' meeting and has confirmed that, before this event takes place, he plans to attend the BRICS meeting scheduled in Russia.

"I think Putin could easily go to Brazil," Lula said. "What I can tell you is that if I am president of Brazil and he comes to Brazil, there is no way they would arrest him," added the Brazilian president.

In March of this year, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against the president of Russia under the presumption of war crimes for the forced deportation of Ukrainian children from areas captured during the Ukrainian war to Russian territory.

Despite the order issued, Kremlin sources reported in mid-August that Putin was considering the possibility of attending the G20 summit held this week in the Indian capital, New Delhi, in person. This would have been his first meeting with Western leaders since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but it was finally his Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, who attended the meeting on behalf of Russia.
