Lavrov assures that Russia wants the war to "end as soon as possible"

Russia thanks Brazil for its "excellent understanding" of the situation

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, stated this Monday during his official visit to Brazil that his country wants the war to "end as soon as possible".

"It is clear that we are interested in ending the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible," Lavrov said at a press conference after meeting his Brazilian counterpart, Mauro Vieira, whom he has invited to visit Russia.

"We have already explained in detail on many occasions the reasons for what is happening, the objectives that we pursue in this regard," Lavrov added, according to Russian media. Thus, Russia hopes that a "lasting, not immediate" solution will be achieved.

In addition, Lavrov has defended the need for a "just, correct and based on international law" world order. In this sense, he thanked the "contribution" of Brazil in the search for a solution to the conflict in Ukraine.

"We are grateful to our Brazilian friends for their excellent understanding of the genesis of this situation. We are grateful for their desire to contribute to the search for ways to resolve it," he pointed out.

Lavrov arrived in Brasilia this Monday, the first leg of a tour that will also take him to Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba, from where he will return to Russia on April 21. One of the main objectives of this tour is to show that Russia is not isolated on the international stage.

Precisely the Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, argued that both Russia and Ukraine made the decision to go to war. In addition, he proposed the constitution of a group of "neutral" countries similar to the G-20 that mediates to achieve peace in Ukraine.

The Brazilian president also pointed out the importance of discussing the situation in Ukraine with the United States and the European Union, whom he considers involved in the war. "We have to convince people that peace is the best way to promote any talks process. As things are, peace is very difficult," he argued.

IN TUNE WITH PRIGOZHIN

Lavrov's statements are in line with those made last weekend by the owner of the Russian mercenary group Wagner, the Russian oligarch Yevgeni Prigozhin, one of the closest allies of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who called for a "total stop " of the so-called Russian "special military operation" in Ukraine because it considers that its objectives have been achieved.

"For the authorities and for society as a whole it is necessary to achieve some kind of courageous total stop to the special military operation," Prigozhin said, according to the Wagner Group press service.

For Prighozin, it would be necessary to "inform the whole world that Russia has achieved the expected results." "We have wiped out a large number of servicemen from the Ukrainian Armed Forces (...). Russia has destroyed a large part of the male population of Ukraine and driven away another large proportion who have fled to Europe," he argued.

In addition, Russia "has separated the Sea of Azov and a large piece of the Black Sea. It has kept a juicy part of the Ukrainian territory and has created a land corridor to Crimea," he stressed.
