LaLiga welcomes the conclusions of the General Advocate of the CJEU on the Super League

MADRID, 15 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

LaLiga, the only league involved in the procedure, celebrated this Thursday the conclusions of the General Advocate of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), who has supported the veto of UEFA and FIFA to the organization of the Super League by a group of teams, including Real Madrid and FC Barcelona, considering that the decision does not violate the competition rules of the European Union.

"LaLiga, as the only league involved in the procedure, welcomes the conclusions of the General Advocate who defends that the FIFA and UEFA rules that make any new competition subject to prior authorization are compatible with Union Law on competition ", exposed the employer in a statement.

"From LaLiga, along with other European leagues, we will continue fighting for the European institutions to legislate and provide legal protection for the current European soccer model," said LaLiga president Javier Tebas.

In his reading, the General Advocate argues that, although the Super League is free to create its own competition outside the UEFA and FIFA ecosystem, however, "it cannot participate in parallel in the official football competitions organized by FIFA and UEFA without the prior authorization of those organizations", LaLiga highlights in its note.

"LaLiga trusts that the CJEU magistrates, when they issue their final verdict in the coming months, share the opinion expressed by the General Advocate. LaLiga is certain that the current European sports model, which has the backing of the institutions European leagues, allows an adequate development of our sport, from the base to the professional categories, with an adequate coexistence between the national leagues and the European competitions", he valued.

The employers recalled in their statement that the European Commission and Parliament have already positioned themselves against the European Super League by defending an "open, democratic model based on meritocracy", a resolution that had the support of 87 percent of votes in Parliament.

"The creation of a Super League outside of this governance model would also mean the end of the European national leagues, it would put an end to a model that has proven its effectiveness for more than 100 years and would break the dream of the millions of fans of national competitions" , concluded LaLiga, which attacked the creation of a league designed "to enrich the biggest clubs and concentrate power in a small number of teams that already dominate European football."
