IU will go with Sumar to the European elections but freezes for now the organic relationship with Díaz's party

Accept 4th place for Manu Pineda despite not being satisfied: The left does not deserve "more division or demoralization"

The Federal Coordinator of IU has decided to accept Sumar's offer for the European elections and will have fourth place on the joint list with other progressive forces, although it considers that it is not the position it deserves, according to sources from the formation.

However, it has been agreed not to participate for the moment in the management of Sumar until the internal debate is held on the relationship it will maintain with the formation led by the second vice president, Yolanda Díaz.

The highest executive body of the party met this afternoon and after a long derivation confirms that its main candidate and current MEP, Manu Pineda, will join the candidacy led by Estrella Galán, for the Sumar quota, despite the fact that a sector of The formation embodied in federations such as Madrid and Valencia defended rejecting going with Sumar to these elections.

Specifically, the alliance with Sumar for the 9-J elections has gone ahead with 68% of the votes of the members of the Federal Coordinator while another 30% have opted to oppose joining the candidacy, with only 2 % abstention, as sources present in the debate have indicated to Europa Press.

During the debate, it was also proposed to consult the militancy on the decision to go with Sumar to the European elections, which according to these sources has been rejected by 53% of the votes compared to 41% who were in favor. On the other hand, 6% of the members of the executive body have abstained.

Thus, the criteria of the federal leadership that advocates running alongside Sumar prosper as it is the "least bad" scenario for IU, but this morning it made clear its tensions with Sumar by advancing that it opened a reflection on the relationship with Díaz's project. and he already left his presence in the air at the Diaz project management meeting this Saturday, something that they already confirm will not occur.

Tonight IU has sent the militancy a letter informing of the decision to accept Sumar's proposal and emphasizes that the fourth place for Pineda does not satisfy them, although it points out that the left "does not deserve more division and demoralization at the current moment of advance reactionary throughout Europe".

In turn, he will try to improve the agreement with Sumar "until the last minute" and reaffirms that IU will run its "own campaign", with its own profile and proposals.

FROM ENDORSEING THE CREATION OF SUMAR TO NOT PARTICIPATING IN ITS DIRECTION

At the internal level, it makes it clear that it freezes its organic link with Díaz's project, given that it was one of the formations that, together with Más Madrid, 'comunes' or Verdes Equo, was called to appoint the members of 30% of the Coordination Group of Sumar, its main management body. In this way, the bad moment with Sumar is evident despite the fact that at the beginning of the new space sponsored by Yolanda Díaz they were one of its main supporters, as well as the 'commons'.

In this way, the Federal Coordinator proclaims that the relationship with Sumar is a matter of "deep significance" and should provoke collective reflection at the next IU assembly. Consequently, until this debate is developed and a decision is made in this regard in the congressional process, the formation will not be part of the organs of the Sumar party.

DISCOMFORT WITH ADDING: MADRID AND VALENCIA DEFENDED GOING ALONE

The proposal for fourth place generated discomfort among sectors of IU, given that during the negotiation with Sumar the second place was sought due to its status as a state force in elections that will be held throughout the country, however, it was surpassed by autonomous formations such as the 'comunes' and Compromís, which respectively have the second and third places in the candidacy apart from being referenced in the European greens.

Thus, IU champions the link with the European left group and demands that visibility to carry out its own campaign for 9-J, where Podemos with former minister Irene Montero as head of the poster competes again with Sumar and seeks to present itself as the option of the alternative left.

In any case, ahead of the meeting the IU executive asked its regional federations to establish a position and there has been a disparity in criteria. Andalusia (the federation with the greatest weight), Asturias or the Balearic Islands were in favor of going with Sumar given that the priority was the re-election of their MEP Manu Pineda.

However, IU in Valencia and Madrid openly defended rejecting Sumar's offer, which they called "unacceptable", censored the "anti-democratic" formulas on the part of Díaz's party and even advocated appearing alone at the European event with the urns.

Likewise, they wanted to call a consultation with the militancy on how to attend the European elections and demanded to suspend the organic relationship with Sumar.

OTHER TENSIONS WITH ADD

Frictions between Sumar and IU have occurred previously, especially due to the distribution of quotas in the state leadership and the decision of Díaz's party to reserve only 30% of this body for its allied parties.

And also this Tuesday they had a differing view of the electoral results in the Basque Country, given that Sumar defends having fulfilled his objective of entering the Basque Parliament while the Secretary of Organization of IU, Ismael González, has stressed that the result It is bad, he has warned that Sumar is not managing to be a unifying space on the left and that the division with Podemos penalizes. "We must stop giving these shows," he stressed in relation to the internal struggles

MÉS AND DRAGO WITHDRAWED THE CANDIDATE FOR THE EUROPEAN

Although Sumar has managed to revalidate its alliance with its main partners with whom it participated in the last general elections, the confluence is reduced with respect to this appointment with two minority formations: Drago Canarias and Més per Mallorca.

The Canary Islands, led by former deputy Alberto Rodríguez, have decided not to attend these elections while the Balearic party has decided to be part of the ERC and Bildu candidacy.
