The Ministry of the Interior and the European border agency (Frontex) have signed this afternoon the Operational Plans for the two joint operations against irregular immigration that both will carry out in 2024, one called 'Índalo', which covers the western Mediterranean, and another that affects the Canary Islands.
According to Interior sources, collaboration continues with the European agency with which Spain "has maintained close cooperation on irregular immigration for years."
Both agreements come after last Thursday the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, attributed in Brussels to "technical" issues the differences with Frontex that had until now suspended these joint operations for migration management in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands.
According to the head of the Interior, the new European regulations on data protection that Frontex must transfer to its operations since January 18, was the root of the differences because the initial proposals on operational plans must be adapted, which is why It was a "technical, not operational" issue, the minister clarified.
