Inflation in France accelerates three tenths, up to 6.3%

The French consumer price index (CPI) stood at 6.3% year-on-year in February, three tenths above the reading for the previous month, and is the highest, at least, since the records available for 2014 , reported this Wednesday the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee).

In monthly terms, the CPI grew 1% compared to 0.8% in January. For its part, core inflation, which excludes food and energy due to its greater volatility, accelerated to 6.1%, five tenths more, and also at maximums.

According to data published by Insee, the rebound in prices reflects higher food prices, with a year-on-year rise of 14.8%, compared to 13.3% in January. Mainly, for fresh products, bread and cereals, meat and cheeses. Meanwhile, energy moderated its increase to 14.1% from 16.3% the previous month.

On the other hand, the cost of services in France increased by 3% year-to-year in February, four tenths above the rise in January, while manufactured goods appreciated by 4.7%, two tenths more.

For its part, the reading of the harmonized inflation index, used by Eurostat in its statistics, rose in February to 7.3% from 7% in January, thus reaching its highest level since the introduction of the euro.
