Guterres mourns the loss of 59 UNRWA members in Israeli bombings in Gaza

MADRID, 30 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has lamented the loss of members of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), since 59 of the employees have died in Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip.

"With my entire UN family, I mourn the loss of so many UNRWA colleagues. In the midst of unimaginable suffering and grief, colleagues in Gaza continue to serve those in need despite the grave risk to their own lives. They have my gratitude, solidarity and total support," he expressed.

These statements come after the agency held a tribute this Sunday for the death of its 59 workers. "The loss of our friends and colleagues is a harsh reminder of the immense human suffering that continues to unfold every day," reads a statement.

The agency's commissioner general, Philippe Lazzarini, stated that "every day becomes darker than the last as the number of murdered colleagues increases," and has denounced once again "the indescribable suffering that emerges from Gaza hour after hour." ".

UNRWA reported that thousands of people have broken into its warehouses and distribution centers in the central and southern Gaza Strip to obtain flour and basic survival items in what the organization already considers as the beginning of the breakdown of the "civic order" in the enclave after days of total siege by Israel.

The Israeli Army has constantly bombed the Hamas-controlled enclave since September 7, killing more than 8,000 civilians, including more than 3,000 children. The Gaza Strip is also under complete siege by the Israeli authorities, so they lack basic survival goods, such as food, water, fuel or electricity.
