Fico confirms after his victory that he will propose negotiating with Russia the end of the war in Ukraine

MADRID, 1 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Former Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has assured after the victory of his Smer party in the legislative elections on Saturday that he will propose the immediate opening of peace negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine and insisted that "there is no need to repeat " his position against military assistance to the Kiev Government.

In his triumphant speech, the former prime minister repeated his campaign message, which put national problems before the war in Ukraine. "Our problems are different. If I receive the mandate, I know exactly what I must do," said Fico, who confirmed that he has not yet received the call from the country's president and political rival, Zuzana Caputova, to initiate the necessary coalition talks.

"In any case, if my party comes to government, whether we have the position of prime minister or not, we will do everything possible to start peace negotiations in Ukraine as soon as possible. On arming Ukraine, you already know our opinion," has indicated.

Fico, who if a coalition agreement is reached would return to the Head of Government for the third time, has assured that he would assume power again without revenge, although he has hinted that "there is a problem" with the head of the National Police, Stefan Hamran, and with special prosecutor Daniel Lipsic, whom he accuses of political persecution. "This is not about revenge. These are basic issues," he said.
