Djokovic and Rublev command the premiere of the Red Group in Turin

MADRID, 14 Nov. (EUROPA PRESS) -

Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic beat Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (6-4, 7-6(4)) on Monday in the Red Group of the ATP Finals, which takes place in Turin (Italy), while Russian Andrey Rublev He has done the same by coming back from his compatriot Daniil Medvedev (6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(7)).

With this victory, Djokovic prevents Tsitsipas from being able to ascend to number one in the ATP ranking in his next update; the Hellenic tennis player needed to win the title in Turin with a perfect 5-0 record to become the 29th player to lead the ranking. Now, only the Spanish Rafa Nadal, who yielded in his debut, could be the first world racket if he is proclaimed champion or runner-up with a balance of 4-1.

The Balkan, current number eight in the world, took advantage of his second chance to break in the first game of the match to take the lead in a set that would end up being awarded and in which he did not even have to face break balls against.

Already during the second set, he had to raise a 'break point', the only one he faced in the match, at 1-2, and he drew from experience in the 'tie-break' to sign his victory in a tournament where he has been proclaimed champion five times.

For his part, the Russian Andrey Rublev suffered a little more to lead the fratricidal duel against his compatriot Daniil Medvedev (6-7(7), 6-3, 7-6(7)). Despite taking the win, Rublev had to recover after losing a 4-1 lead in the first set and a 6-2 lead in the tie-break; Medvedev, number five in the world, turned the score around to win the opening set.

The number seven in the ATP ranking, however, did not sink and started the second set with a break in the third game that was worth it to put the partial on track, solved with a new final break. The balance of the third set forced the dispute of another tiebreaker, in which, this time, Rublev managed to be crowned.

"I was thinking about the US Open, because when we played the quarterfinals in 2020, I think I was 5-1 in the tiebreak. I was thinking that the same thing couldn't happen, I had to change something. If I won a set, even if I lost in three, it's good in this group stage. You have to fight for every point and every game, and I was able to win," Rublev said after the match.
