Calviño announces IMEC's ​​intention to install its second R&D center in Europe in Spain

MADRID, 12 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The first vice president has advanced in the Information Breakfasts of Europa Press that yesterday her department, together with the Ministry of Science, signed a declaration of intent with the IMEC for the installation in Spain of its second R D center in Europe.

According to the minister, the IMEC --based in Leuven (Belgium)-- is the world reference institute for semiconductor research and development and, in her opinion, this announcement means that one of the most recognized institutions in this field at global settles in Spain.

The IMEC has around 5,000 researchers from 95 countries and around 600 industrial partners, including "all the major international companies in the sector", the Ministry of Economy highlighted in a statement.

"This announcement joins those of other major international operators in the field of semiconductors and microelectronics, such as Intel, Cisco, or more recently, Broadcom, who have expressed their intention to establish research or production centers in Spain", has added the portfolio that Calviño directs.

In this context, the first vice-president has valued that with the Strategic Project for the Economic Recovery and Transformation of Microelectronics and Semiconductors, known as Perte Chip, Spain has been placed "on the European map of the design and manufacture of chips" in " only one year."
