Borrell criticizes that PSOE endorses the ERC and Junts story of the process and does not mention the independence responsibility

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, stated this Monday regarding the Amnesty Law, that he does not share the story described in the agreements between PSOE, Junts and ERC about what happened in the independence process. in Catalonia and emphasizes that the responsibilities of the independence movement "are not even mentioned."

Borrell prefers not to comment on the constitutionality of the norm because he says he is not an expert on that matter nor on its political motivation, "that is, on its necessity and its virtue," as he indicates. However, he makes it clear that he does not share the story of the process accepted by the PSOE.

"It seems that we agree with a good part of their theses about a conflict that supposedly began in 1714. I do not share that story," he reiterated. "And I don't know if it was necessary. But it is not my interpretation of what happened in Catalonia those years," he points out next, in an interview in La Vanguardia, collected by Europa Press.

In this regard, Borrell has also criticized the attitude of the European People's Party (EPP) in the debate on the amnesty law that took place last week in the European Parliament.

In this sense, he has pointed out that "one can discuss the amnesty, be for or against it. But it cannot be said that the Spanish political and legal system has suffered a kind of cardiac arrest", something that in his opinion ends up giving weapons to the independentistas to criticize the Spanish system, verbatim.

A few days ago, after the signing of the agreements between PSOE and the Catalan independence parties, Borrell admitted his "concern" about the agreements for an amnesty law demanded by ERC and Junts to support the re-election of Pedro Sánchez as President of the Government. "Everyone who knows me and my career can imagine what I think," he said at the time.

During his time as Foreign Minister, Borrell made the fight against the independence narrative one of his banners and in different forums and international visits he dedicated himself to dismantling the independence arguments, which he accused of "lying for years" and presenting themselves as victims. .

He insisted that the separation of Catalonia from the rest of Spain would have "very high costs in the short term" and was critical of the idea of ​​a mediator between the Government and the independentists, pointing out that he only intended to internationalize the conflict and draw parallels with conflicts such as Kosovo. or Bosnia.
