At least six injured, including four children, by a stabbing in a park in Annecy (France)

At least six people have been injured, including four children, by a multiple stabbing perpetrated this Thursday in a park in the French town of Annecy, in the southeast of the country, according to police sources who have also confirmed the arrest of the main suspect, of Syrian origin.

The attack took place around 9:45 am, in a park located next to the lake. The assaulted minors were between 22 months and three years old and, according to the sources cited by Franceinfo, at least three of the victims -- two children and one adult -- are in serious condition.

The suspect has been identified as a 31-year-old asylum seeker of Syrian origin, according to BFMTV. The French authorities are not aware that he has a criminal record, apart from the fact that he submitted his asylum request in November 2022, alleging that he was a persecuted Christian, and that this same year Sweden granted him refugee status.

The authorities have not yet clarified the reasons, but for the moment the hypothesis of terrorism seems ruled out. The anti-terrorist Prosecutor's Office, responsible for examining possible attacks, has not been summoned on this occasion.

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has condemned the attack, "absolutely vile", which has left two children and an adult "between life and death. "The country is shocked," he added, in a message published on Twitter and with which he wanted to express his solidarity with the victims.

The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, who will visit the area together with the Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, has also regretted the attack, noting that "the individual has been arrested thanks to the very rapid intervention of the forces of order."
