Armengol will seek "a broad agreement" for the use of languages in Congress

The objective is to "modernize" the Lower House: "You have to get rid of fears, Congress must look more like real Spain"

BARCELONA/MADRID, 20 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The president of Congress, Francina Armengol, has assured that the first thing she is going to do to promote the agreement on the use of Catalan, Galician and Basque in the Lower House is a round with the parliamentary groups "in search of a broad agreement normative, then technical. In her opinion, the Regulations of Congress "do not prevent taking this initiative."

In various interviews collected by Europa Press with 'El País', 'eldiario' and 'La Vanguardia', Armengol has addressed her first days as president of Congress, in which the use of the co-official languages in the Lower House has been one of the first debates that arose in his presidency.

"You have to get rid of fears, Congress must look more like real Spain," said the socialist deputy, who defines herself as "federalist." Armengol has affirmed that the objective of "modernizing" the institution and "making normal" the use of the co-official languages has been set.

"The use of co-official languages in Congress will make Spain stronger and we will all feel more represented by state institutions," he defended. The president of Congress recalled that citizens "freely decided to vote knowing the possible scenarios and alliances" and she is confident that Felipe VI will exercise his competence to propose a candidate for investiture "with good judgment."

On whether he believes that in a few months it will be easier to speak in Catalan in Congress than in some areas of the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community around the proposals that Vox proposes to the PP governments, he said that he hopes this does not happen: " It would be very sad."

He has called for "a serene reflection" on the use of the co-official languages of the territory in Congress because he believes that they are the heritage of the Spanish people, in his words.

"Spain is a country of wonderful diversity", she added, for which she considered that the Lower House should be, according to her, the expression of that real Spain, which is a plural and diverse Spain.

Armengol has predicted that this new legislature will be one of "great progress", and has stated verbatim that he will do everything possible so that the investiture process runs as quickly as possible.

When asked if she is president of the Lower House to help ease relations between the PSOE candidate and acting president, Pedro Sánchez, with the former president of the Generalitat Carles Puigdemont, she replied that "she has not spoken to him for a long time" but who collaborated when she was president of the Balearic government and he of Catalonia.
