Amir Nasr Azadani, sentenced to 26 years in prison by Iranian justice

MADRID, 9 Ene. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Justice of Iran has sentenced the soccer player Amir Nasr Azadani to 26 years in prison on Monday for his involvement during the anti-government protests that have taken place in the country since last September and following the death of Mahsa Amini while in custody for violating the Islamic dress code.

Azadani was one of the two people sentenced for the actions registered on November 16, when three members of the security forces died during an incident registered in the framework of the protests in the province of Isfahan.

The athlete has been accused of belonging to an illegal group and committing crimes against public order, meeting and conspiring to violate the security of the country, as well as committing 'moharebé', according to information from the Iran International chain.

The 26-year-old Iranian professional footballer faced possible execution by hanging after taking part in protests for women's rights in his country. The international players' union, FIFPRO, called for "the immediate removal of his ban."
