Alonso: "I just wanted to finish, when I was in the air I was scared"

MADRID, 24 Oct. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso (Alpine) acknowledged that he was "scared" this Sunday in his accident with Lance Stroll's Aston Martin, which made him take off from the ground, in his "best race" of the year to finish seventh but with urgency for the United States Grand Prix to end.

"I'm happy to be here talking to you because I could be in the hospital for sure. We were lucky with the first safety car, we were in the lead group. I caught Stroll's slipstream, I moved at the last moment, so did he and It was a bit of bad luck, that we did not understand each other very well," he told Dazn, after a tremendous scare.

The double world champion was able to return to the race and climb from last position to seventh, but explained that he only thought about finishing the GP. "When I was in the air I was a bit scared, because when you go towards the outer fences, you can do 360 and it can be dangerous. When I landed I thought that the whole car had broken and that the race was over," he said.

"Finishing seventh seems incredible. It's the best race of the year for sure. The last laps I was pushing as if they were timed laps, it was the best race of the year but I still have the scare in my body. The last 20 laps I was still thinking in the accident and I just wanted to finish the race," he finished.
