Alex Palou to be McLaren reserve driver in 2023

The 2021 Indycar Series champion will combine F1 with 'Indy'

MADRID, 1 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) -

The Spanish Alex Palou will be a test driver for the McLaren Formula 1 Team in the 2023 World Cup and will combine this work with that of the official driver of the British team in the Indycar Series, a championship of which he is the current champion.

"2021 NTT INDYCAR SERIES Champion Alex Palou will be one of McLaren Formula 1 Team's reserve drivers for the 2023 season. Palou will provide support to the team alongside his INDYCAR driving duties," McLaren announced.

Thus, the Catalan will be available as a third driver --reserve-- for the Formula 1 team and for all events that do not conflict with his INDYCAR commitments.

Palou has previously driven an F1 car in free practice at the 2022 United States Grand Prix and has driven the MCL35M at Barcelona and Spielberg as part of the team's driver development testing programme.

The man from Sant Antoni de Vilamajor has accumulated four wins and 15 INDYCAR podiums to date and became the first Spanish driver to win the NTT INDYCAR SERIES championship when he claimed the 2021 title.

"I am excited to be part of the McLaren team as one of its reserve drivers in 2023. I have been behind the wheel of the MCL35M and MCL36 and it has been a great experience. I look forward to continuing my development as a driver and I appreciate the confidence McLaren has in me with this new role next year," said the pilot.

For his part, McLaren F1 Team Principal Andreas Seidl said the team is delighted to have Alex on board. "He impressed with his FP1 session in Austin and his driver development tests this year," he said.

"He has many notable achievements in motorsport so far, particularly the 2021 INDYCAR championship title, so it's great to be able to expand his role in the team and we look forward to working more closely with him," he said looking forward to the future.

The 25-year-old Palou won three races and scored eight podium finishes in 2021 on his way to winning the title in his second year in the IndyCar Series. Prior to this title, he was third in the Super Formula championship in 2019, in which he claimed victory.
