A mass of cold air abruptly changes the weather on the Peninsula this Monday, with 11 provinces on alert

MADRID, 24 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

A mass of cold air will arrive on the Peninsula this Monday and will cause a sudden change in weather, with widespread rainfall and a drop in temperatures, on a day with eleven provinces at risk from rain, wind, snow and waves, according to the prediction of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Specifically, Asturias, Cantabria, León, Palencia and Zamora will be on yellow alert due to snowfall, while Pontevedra, Almería, Cádiz and Murcia will be on yellow alert due to strong gusts of wind that will reach 50-60 km/h.

Rain alerts will take place in Cádiz and Huelva, where up to 15 liters per square meter can accumulate in one hour. In addition, Almería and Navarra will be at risk from strong gusts of wind that may reach 70 km/h.

The Aemet predicts lower temperatures than normal for the season, with probable snowfall in mountain systems and surrounding areas. In the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, an increase in instability is expected due to the influence of several low pressure centers, with a predominance of cloudy or overcast skies and practically widespread rainfall moving from south to north.

In the morning, cloudy or overcast skies and precipitation are unlikely in the northwest, where the arrival of a new Atlantic low will bring precipitation in the afternoon. With uncertainty, more intense storms are expected in a wide area from Andalusia to Navarra. They may be accompanied by storms in Alborán, the Balearic Islands, the center and south of the peninsula and, in the late hours, on the Galician coasts.

These precipitations will be in the form of snow in the northern mountains and Sierra Morena, without ruling out the center, with 5 centimeters in the Pyrenees. In the Canary Islands it will be cloudy in the north, with precipitation tending to decrease and with some intervals in the south without ruling out some precipitation.

Mists and morning fog banks scattered in the mountains, as well as intermittent during the day due to the passage of fronts. Probable haze in the southeast half of the peninsula, the Balearic Islands and, less likely, in the Canary Islands, tending to disappear from the west.

The snow level will drop to 600/800 meters in the northwest, to 800/1,000 meters in the rest of the west, to 1,000/1,400 meters in the center and north center, to 1,400/1,800 meters in the Pyrenees and above 2,000 meters in the southeast.

Likewise, this Monday an almost general drop in temperatures is expected, notable in the maximums on the Atlantic slope. Temperatures will increase in the Canary Islands, as well as maximum temperatures in the eastern Cantabrian Sea and minimum temperatures in the northeast. Frosts are expected in the mountains of the extreme north.

In the Balearic Islands, the eastern third of the peninsula and the northwest, winds will blow from the east, shifting to the west and south. In the rest they will roll west, intensifying. Strong or very strong gusts are expected in the Strait, Alborán and northern Navarra, and with strong intervals on the northwest and southeast coasts. In the Canary Islands it will blow from the northwest and north with very strong gusts in the western islands.
