A 6.7 earthquake shakes the coast of Ecuador

MADRID, 18 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) -

An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 on the Richter scale has shaken this Saturday the Ecuadorian Pacific coast without any news of damage or tsunami for the moment.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has located the epicenter of the earthquake 6 kilometers north-northeast of the town of Baláo and 66.4 kilometers deep.

The Geophysical Institute (IG) of the National Polytechnic School of Ecuador has confirmed an earthquake from 6.5 to 29.12 kilometers from Balao, Guayas province. The tremor was registered at 12:12 local time (18:12 Spanish peninsular time).

The earthquake has been felt in towns such as Pomasqui, La Vicentina, Carcelén and Nayón, according to the newspaper 'El Comercio'. From Guayaquil, Loja, Ambato, Zamora, Cuenca or Manabí they have reported a strong tremor.

In Quito, the Ecuadorian capital, the movement was felt slightly, reports the newspaper 'El Universal'.
