The US Navy is Launching a Blockchain Pilot Project for its Medical Supply Lines

The US Navy is working with Consensus Network to use the IoTex Blockchain to monitor the health of 700,000 Navy sailors and marines in real-time. It is not the first time that the US military has tried its hand at blockchain technology. The latest revelation is just one of the many ways the US military is considering using blockchain technology.

The US Navy signed a $1.5 million pilot project with Consensus Networks to create a blockchain-enabled logistics system called HealthNet in May 2021. The project is built on the IoTex blockchain, which is focused on the internet of Things. This project is halfway complete, according to recent reports. The first pilot will launch in early 2022.

Consensus Networks plans to offer real-time monitoring and logistics for around 700,000 sailors and marine via HealthNet. They decided to use the IoTex blockchain to meet the scalability and security needs of the Navy. According to Nathan Miller, the founder, and CEO of Consensus Networks, the project is 50% complete. Miller added that the Navy was pleased with their progress thus far. He added that HealthNet would be open to the Navy as well as other partners interested in its potential.

The pilot will seek to improve the outdated and inefficient system used right now. They include outdated medical logistics, the demand for prediction of blood product demand, pharmaceuticals, and supply of medical equipment, and prostheses.

According to Miller, the medical industry is poised to renew its systems using blockchain-based solutions. Miller noted that it was surprising that car makers such as Ford had better systems to monitor the health of their cars in the shop and on the road than the medical sector when it came to monitoring the health of people.

HealthNet is not going to be exclusive to the Navy. It is going to be a system for all medical operators that helps them to utilize and integrate data environments and interfaces to track medical supplies from the plant to the patient. The result would be reduced delivery time and waste.

Miller gave the example of medical homes. He noted that it would allow them to give better care without having to drive or being driven to a hospital. Miller said that the system would keep track of their health and predict their needs and get them sorted, which would mean there is no need for clinic visits.

In the US military, the air force was one of the first to make a blockchain contract. The US Navy then worked with Simba Chain via a $10 million project to create a secure messaging platform. In 2021, Simba was given an additional $1.5 million to create a solution to enable demand sensing for critical weapons parts.
