Presents ‘Lunat’, a spreadable cream made from cocoa and carob beans that seeks to stand up to other traditional snacks

The UPV Spread Sensations S.L. team has won second prize in the 14th edition of the competition for the creation of innovative food products Ecotrophelia España 2023, after the final held at the Alicia Foundation, a research center dedicated to technological innovation in cooking located in Sant Fruitós de Bages (Barcelona).
In front of a professional jury, the team made up of students from the Higher Technical School of Agricultural Engineering and the Natural Environment (ETSEAMN) presented ‘Lunat’, a spreadable cream made from cacao and carob that highlights the cultivation of carob , traditional in the Valencian Community, and promotes the consumption of zero kilometer products, the university entity detailed in a statement.
“Lunat is a delicious spread created from garrofon that seeks to revalue its consumption and offer an innovative alternative use for this raw material. In addition, it aims to become a tasty and nutritious alternative to other traditional snacks,” explained the components of the UPV team.
Spread Sensation S.L. is a Start-Up of the Spontaneous Generation group ‘Fornejant Ciència’ and its objective is to offer conscious consumers gastronomic alternatives. Specifically, it is made up of students Carla Martí (Food Science and Technology), Rayanne Nebbar (Agronomic and Natural Environment Engineering), Miriam Millán, Elisa García and Maria San Juan (Biotechnology).
The work, awarded 1,500 euros, has been supervised by the professor and deputy director of the ETSEAMN, Purificación García Segovia, who has highlighted the “enormous young talent and commitment to innovation” carried out by the ETSEAMN and the UPV, which contributes “a new vision for the food industry.”
The Spontaneous Generation program is a launcher for initiatives that come entirely from UPV students, promoting transversal skills and the figure of the student-mentor.
Ecotrophelia Spain is a student competition whose objective is to create and promote the marketing of new eco-innovative food products, promoted by the Spanish Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB) and which has the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAP).
Of the more than 20 proposals received, only six made it to the final to defend their work before a professional jury chaired by the director of the Alicia Foundation, Toni Massanés, and made up of representatives of the sector and the Administration, such as the general director of Industry Food Officer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, José Miguel Herrero.
In this 14th edition, four awards have been given (to the first three finishers and a special one in the Entrepreneurship category), which will receive their recognition in a ceremony to be held on October 26 in Madrid, within the framework of the event. innovation Alibetopias 2023.
